Update: I received the following email from the developer of Buddi and with his permission, I'll share it here as it contains some important information of which I was not aware. Me? I'm not so sure I'll be buying Quicken again. If Buddi doesn't meet your needs, you haven't lost anything by looking at it. The annoyance saved over digging around Intuit's mostly Windows-centric web site, priceless. If Buddi meets your personal needs, it's a cool $59.95 you don't have to spend on Quicken Mac 2007. There's also a nifty feature that lets you put away money for future expenses with a category of accounts called 'prepaid liabilities.' Buddi is also religious about back-ups, which is good if you're not. Anyone who's ever had a laptop stolen can appreciate that particular trick.

Buddi also has a nice encryption feature allowing you to password protect and AES encrypt your financial data. It doesn't do 15 things you don't need and none of those things get in the way of doing what you do need to do. Creature feep-I mean, feature creep-hasn't turned it into a hulking behemoth blob of bloat. For that, you need Quicken.įor all that Buddi doesn't do, it does some things that make it desirable. Buddi also won't play nice with Quickbooks or TurboTax. But as something like 75 percent of Americans don't own stock, that may not be a problem. So if you trade, or have significant assets in the stock market, Buddi may not be for you.

Buddi also won't manage your stock accounts. I didn't have any performance problems, but it's a risk you'll take.

Buddi's written in Java (and requires Mac OS 10.4 and Java 1.5), so there may be performance issues (testing performance on large files to ferret out those performance issues is beyond the scope of a mini-review). So if you want to import Quicken data, you're stuck writing your own import plugin, or wishing someone else would write one. You need a plugin to import, but to be honest, it doesn't appear there are any plugins. It doesn't connect with your bank and download information, either automatically or manually. There are budgeting and reporting tools-simple ones-but sufficient for most purposes. If you can manage a checkbook and transfer money between accounts, you should be able to make Buddi work. The paradigm of accounts/transactions/categories is mostly the same.

It's not quite so slick as Quicken, but it's usable. If you've used Quicken, you should be able to catch on to Buddi fairly quickly.
